Does drinking more water really help dieting?

Here is the source for the full article:

http://ping.fm/XtRKL

A small study says it may help you burn a few more calories each day. How many? About 50 calories per liter or quart of water. About 25 calories per water bottle-full of water. Mind you, that's only 5 M&Ms - plain, not peanut.

Why Drink More When Dieting?

* Drinking a big glass of water whenever you feel hungry and before a meal or snack fills the stomach briefly and makes you feel fuller and stop eating sooner.

* Breaking down body fat and body muscle during weight loss produces wastes that must be eliminated through the kidneys. Drinking enough water is important to keep the kidneys functioning to remove these wastes.

* Popular high-protein diets produce more waste products from digestion, let alone from breaking down stored fat. Kidney function is even more important when on a high-protein diet.

* Drinking more water does not "flush fat."

* If the dieter is drinking plain water, he/she is less likely to be drinking something with calories in it.

Drinking Water Briefly Increases Metabolism

Drinking 500 mL of water (a half-liter or about a pint) increased the study participants' metabolism briefly - for about a half hour. In that time they burned an extra 25 calories. That's about a quarter of a piece of sliced bread, or 5 M&Ms. The researchers theorized that most of the effect comes from warming the water in the stomach. In the male participants the calories came mostly from stored fat, in the women it came from stored carbohydrates. The paper was published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, December, 2003. It was conducted by researchers in Berlin.

Eight Glasses of Water a Day?

The study provides some support for the general recommendation to drink eight glasses of water a day while dieting. For most people that would add a liter or two to their regular water intake. The extra calorie-burn would be about 100 calories a day if drinking 2 liters (2 quarts or 4 water-bottles full) more than usual.

Dangers of Too Much Water

Don't start drinking an extra gallon of water a day
Water taken in must be in balance with body salt - electrolytes. The body needs to maintain salt balance or risk hyponatremia with heart attack and even death. Drinking too much water dilutes the salt in your blood and tissues - and can kill you. Healthy athletes have died from drinking too much plain water and not replacing salt. Dieters should not plunge into drinking gallons of water a day in hopes of burning a few more calories. Drink an extra few glasses, yes. But a gallon is too much.

Drinking and Walking

Exercise such as walking causes the metabolism to rise and body water to be lost through increased respiration and sweat. Walkers should drink a large glass of water an hour before walking, then drink about a cup of water every mile. When you finish walking, drink a glass of water. Guidelines for the marathon and half-marathon now say to "drink when thirsty" rather than pushing water, in order to prevent hyponatremia - drinking too much with replacing electrolytes.

We hope you enjoyed this information from the above sources.

Woman Gets Vision Back After Chiropractic Adjustment

A feel good story appeared in the August 3, 2005 issue of the The Daily Times of Delaware. The story starts off by reporting, "Doctors said after Laura Hattier was born, she'd never be able to see like a normal person, let alone drive a car -- but that didn't stop her. She later entered a beauty pageant -- and won. After a chiropractic adjustment, her vision came back and she married the chiropractor."

According to the article, Laura was diagnosed at birth, with congenital nystagmus. This is a condition where the eye experiences involuntary shaking, causing severe vision loss. According to Laura one in a thousand children are born with this condition. She noted, "When I was born, I was completely blind. The doctor's told my parents there was no hope."

This situation did not stop Laura from working to achieve. As a child her vision improved, but she was still unable to play or read like normal children. "When I was a child, I would look in an adult text book and all I could see were dots," Hattier said. "I thought, 'Wow, grown-ups are really special to be able to look at dots and get words out of that!'."

By the time Laura turned 16 her vision had improved a little but she was still legally blind. Additionally she had begun suffering from severe stomach ulcers. Doctors continued to tell her there was no hope for either of her conditions.

However, Laura did not let that stop her. She then entered the Miss Laurel beauty pageant -- and won. She noted that event changed her life and opened doors that would have otherwise remained closed. She commented, "That was the best things about my teenage years."

While continuing on to college, Laura took a part-time job at chiropractor Donald Hattier's office in Delmar. She noted his belief in chiropractic by recalling, "He suggested that everybody should get adjusted (chiropractic) if they need it or not just because it's a healthy and holistic thing to do."

It was in this circumstance that her life was changed forever. After just her first adjustment, her ulcers disappeared and her vision began to improve. Laura commented, "I don't know if it was coincidence or chiropractic."

On her last day of employment, Dr. Donald asked her on a date. The rest as they say is history. The article notes that Laura and Dr. Donald Hattier now have four children and live near Dagsboro. At age 39, Laura is living the life she never thought possible. Her vision has improved to 20/50 and she reports that she is able to take care of her family and run daily errands. "I can pick my kids up from school, I can drive my kids to church and I can go to the grocery store for my family," she said. "I am truly thankful for that."
What are you doing today to be healthier?

Studies show that between 40,000 and 100,000 Americans die every year from improper medications to errors on the operating table. ABC News. That's as low as 109 people a day, to as high as 274 people a day die each day from medical errors!

Dr. Robert Wachter, author of "Understanding Patient Safety," said, "That would be the equivalent of a large jet crashing every single day in the United States."

Don't want side effects from medication and surgeries? Then ensure you are seeking and focusing on ways to improve your health. Create an extremely full 'health account' with yourself. Simple things like drinking lots of water, eating fruits and vegetables (ideally 7-10 servings a day), exercise and getting regular Chiropractic adjustments can all have amazing, long standing benefits. Great health is not a passive event, so congrats on taking action and doing something each day to improve your health.
Chiropractic Neck Adjustments are Extremely Safe

A study published in the scientific medical journal "Spine" notes the safety of chiropractic. The article published in the October 2007 issue of the journal was titled, "Safety of Chiropractic Manipulation of the Cervical Spine: A Prospective National Survey".

The study was a prospective national survey designed to, "estimate the risk of serious and relatively minor adverse events following chiropractic manipulation of the cervical spine by a sample of U.K. chiropractors."

The authors admitted that the risk of any serious side effects to chiropractic care was relatively unknown to them and the medical community. The chiropractic profession has long noted that the malpractice rates for the chiropractic profession at large, a possible indicator for injury from care, were considerably lower than any other medical health care providers.

This study looked at the outcomes from 19,722 chiropractic patients who had received some form or another of neck adjustments that they referred to as "chiropractic manipulation of the cervical spine." The researchers reviewed a total of 50,276 neck adjustments and looked to see if there were any serious side effects from the chiropractic care. They defined serious effects to be those that resulted in the need to be referred to a hospital, or that caused a worsening of symptoms immediately after treatment and/or resulted in persistent or significant disability or incapacity.

The results as quoted in the study were that, "There were no reports of serious adverse events." Researchers did not find any serious adverse effects in any of the subjects they studied. They also noted that this is the first medical study of its kind by stating, "Safety of treatment interventions is best established with prospective surveys, and this study is unique in that it is the only prospective survey on such a large scale specifically estimating serious adverse events following cervical spine manipulation."

Researchers noted the safety advantage between chiropractic care and drug care by saying, "The risk rates described in this study compare favorably to those linked to drugs routinely prescribed for musculoskeletal conditions in general practice." They summed up their findings when they stated, "On this basis, this survey provides evidence that cervical spine manipulation is a relatively safe procedure when administered by registered U.K. chiropractors."

GOT HEADACHES?

THERE IS A SOLUTION!

Did you know that chiropractic is one of the most effective solutions for Headaches?

We have helped many people throughout the years with headaches. It is a common myth that headache pain comes merely from stress.

Headaches can actually be caused from nerve irritation in the neck from misaligned or stiff joints, just like back pain can be caused by nerve irritation
in the lower spine. Therefore if the nerve irritation or blockages are not removed then the person can continue to have problems.

What Causes headaches?

There are several potential causes. If the neck is stressed from sleeping wrong, sitting in bad posture, or from a previous injury such as a
car accident then this can cause pressure on the neck and irritate the nerves in the area. Misalignments and stiffness occurs.

According to MedicineNet.com:

Headache is defined as pain in the head or upper neck.
It is one of the most common locations of pain in the body and has many causes.

Tension headaches are the most common type of primary headache;
as many as 90% of adults have had or will have tension headaches.
Migraine headaches are the second most common type of primary headache.
An estimated 28 million people in the United States (about 12% of the population)
will experience migraine headaches.

When there are problems with the neck and spine this can block the bodies ability to cope with the
situation adequately – that is when you get a headache or neck pain.
A headache is your body trying to tell you that there is a blockage somewhere in the neck or spine.

What is the Solution?

Remove the blockage in the spine and help realign the joints with Chiropractic
and other natural modalities.

This makes perfect sense as your body is trying to tell you what’s wrong and showing the pathway to fixing it! The next
time you or someone you know experiences a headache, remember that it is your bodies way of letting you know – it’s time to remove the
blockage!

The Power of Fish!

View at http://chiropractorchicago.blogspot.com/

New research shows why eating
Fish (or Flax Seed Oil) is a great way to staying
healthy!

Why is every nutritionist raving about the
health benefits of eating fish? The first
reason is the omega-3 fatty acids found in
abundance in fish. What is the benefit of
omega-3 fatty acids? Harvard and others
have documented that omega-3 is
associated with a lowered risk for heart
disease!

What are the healthiest fish to eat? It is
generally agreed that cold water fish are
packed with omega-3’s, including these
types of fish:
• Salmon
• Mackerel
• Tuna
• Lake trout
• Sardines (yuck!)

**Also the plant version for omegas is FLAX SEED OIL
which anyone can eat on a daily basis with cereal or yogurt.

I’ve recently read some controversy over
so-called “farm raised fish.” It was alleged
that farm raised fish was not as healthy.
I’ll continue to monitor this, in
case new information becomes available.

The second reason to eat fish… is
because it might make you emotionally
happier. There is new evidence published
in the American Journal of Psychiatry that
suggests that an omega-3 acid called "EEPA"
prevents clinical depression. Six of
10 patients taking a fish-oil supplement noted
a 50% reduction in their depression levels.
My advice: Combining chiropractic with
a great diet is the path to a disease free life.
Eat fish (or Flax Seed oil) for good health – and it might just
put a smile on your face!

Do you know someone with Low Back pain?
(From HealthDay News in Atlanta)

Why is it important to get your back checked out? See below for what the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons have to say.

Low back pain -- ranging from mild discomfort to debilitating agony -- plagues nearly everyone at some point. But even mild low back pain can interfere with your life and your work.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons lists these common causes of low back pain:

* Lifting an object using the back, not the legs.
* Degenerative changes in the spine as people age.
* Straining the back during activity.
* An injury (tear or herniation) to a disc in the spine.
* Spondylolisthesis, a condition in which the vertebrae slip out of place and put pressure on nerves in the spine.
* Spinal stenosis, which occurs when the space around the spine narrows, resulting in pressure on nearby nerves and the spinal cord.
* Scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine.

The Milk Myth: What Your Body Really Needs

Click here for the full article

http://ping.fm/dzJ5D

A recent study claims that young adults are not drinking enough milk -- at least according to press reports on the matter. But according to the study’s lead author Nicole Larson, the focus on the study was on calcium.

The words "milk" and "calcium" are often used interchangeably in the popular press. But while milk is a calcium source, no standard other than that of the National Dairy Council considers it the best calcium source.

The suggestion that you need to drink three glasses of the secretion of a cow's mammary glands in order to be healthy is a bit outrageous and doesn't fit the human evolutionary profile. In fact, most humans around the world cannot easily digest cow milk.

Yogurt has more calcium than milk and is easier to digest. Collards and other greens also have about as much or more calcium than milk by the cup. Greens, unlike milk, have the added benefit of vitamin K, also necessary for strong bones. Sesame is also very high in calcium.

When you measure calcium by cup of food product, milk is high on the list. When you view it by calorie, though, milk is at the bottom. A hundred calories of turnip greens have over three times as much calcium as 100 calories of whole milk.

Cancer Institute Warns of Cell Phone Risks

For the full article click on the link below

http://ping.fm/J6Bpm

The head of a prominent cancer research institute has issued an unprecedented warning to his faculty and staff: Limit cell phone use because of the possible risk of cancer.

The warning came from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. Herberman says his warning is based on early unpublished data. He argues that people should take action now -- especially when it comes to children.

"Really at the heart of my concern is that we shouldn't wait for a definitive study to come out, but err on the side of being safe rather than sorry later," Herberman said.

There are many simple precautions that you can take to reduce your exposure to information-carrying radiowaves and the electromagnetic radiation emitted from your cell phone – both of which are hazardous to your health. Here are my best guidelines:

* Children Should Never Use Cell Phones: Barring a life-threatening emergency, children should not use a cell phone, or a wireless device of any type. Children are far more vulnerable to cell phone radiation than adults, because of their thinner skull bones.

* Reduce Your Cell Phone Use: Turn your cell phone off more often. Reserve it for emergencies or important matters.

* Use A Land Line At Home And At Work: Although more and more people are switching to using cell phones as their exclusive phone contact, it is a dangerous trend and you can choose to opt out of the madness.

* Reduce or Eliminate Your Use of Other Wireless Devices: You would be wise to cut down your use of these devices. Just as with cell phones, it is important to ask yourself whether or not you really need to use them every single time. If you must use a portable home phone, use the older kind that operates at 900 MHz. They are no safer during calls, but at least they do not broadcast constantly even when no call is being made.

* Use Your Cell Phone Only Where Reception Is Good: The weaker the reception, the more power your phone must use to transmit, and the more power it uses, the more radiation it emits, and the deeper the dangerous radio waves penetrate into your body. Ideally, you should only use your phone with full bars and good reception.

* Turn Your Cell Phone Off When Not In Use: As long as your cell phone is on, it emits radiation intermittently, even when you are not actually making a call.

* Keep Your Cell Phone Away From Your Body When It Is On: The most dangerous place to be, in terms of radiation exposure, is within about six inches of the emitting antenna. You do not want any part of your body within that area.

* Use Safer Headset Technology: Wired headsets will certainly allow you to keep the cell phone farther away from your body. However, if a wired headset is not well-shielded -- and most of them are not -- the wire itself acts as an antenna attracting ambient information carrying radio waves and transmitting radiation directly to your brain. Make sure that the wire used to transmit the signal to your ear is shielded.

The best kind of headset to use is a combination shielded wire and air-tube headset. These operate like a stethoscope, transmitting the information to your head as an actual sound wave; although there are wires that still must be shielded, there is no wire that goes all the way up to your head.

I hope you enjoyed this research.

Nine Year Old Boy Can Walk Again Thanks to Chiropractic

Nine Year Old Boy Can Walk Again Thanks to Chiropractic

Click here to watch the video:

http://ping.fm/Z12sf

A feel good story by Barbara Morse Silva appeared on, June 1, 2009, on the NBC TV news station "turnto10.com" serving Rhode Island and Massachusetts. This story followed the case of a young boy who was able to walk again after chiropractic care. In this news story a young boy named Charlie had a rare disease that created tumors in his brain, heart and kidneys. He was also born with fetal alcohol syndrome and has a history of seizures.

Five years ago he was adopted by the Rivera family. His adopted mother Michele described young Charlie by noting that he was confined to a wheelchair, was lethargic and on all kinds of medicines. His adopted father Abraham added that Charlie, "basically sat in a wheelchair slumped over. There was nothing for the child."

The Riveras took Charlie to a chiropractor Dr. Ross Rutkowski of Somerset, MA. Dr. Rutkowski explained that he performed a specific type of chiropractic that involved posture to help the upper part of Charlie's neck causing a change instantly after the first adjustment. His mother recalled, "He'd never slept a full night since we had gotten him the first five years." Mrs. Rivera then recalled what happened after Charlie's first adjustment, "When he came here (the chiropractor's office) that night was the first night he slept, and it was 24 hours with no seizure." His father noted that now him and Charlie can make eye contact.

The story then notes that Charlie is walking a lot, and his seizures have also been "few and far between". The story notes that the Riveras call this nothing short of a miracle and their son now has a good quality of life.

The story did point that at first the Riveras would not even consider going to a chiropractor. Mr. Rivera admitted that he, "Would never even go a chiropractor." But now he says, "Amazing, all my aches are gone to! Yup I'm a patient now too."

Dr. Rutkowski pointed out, "To be clear, chiropractic is not a treatment for seizures. It's a way of taking pressure away from that nervous system so that the body always does the healing. We just remove the interference and the body heals."

The Five Absolute Worst Foods You Can Eat

NEWS FLASH from Chiropractical Solutions and Massage in Chicago

http://www.ChiropracticalSolutions.com

The Five Absolute Worst Foods You Can Eat

By Dr. Joseph Mercola
with Rachael Droege

There are no "bad" foods, right? Only food you should eat in moderation? Well, not really. The following foods are so bad for your body that I really can't see any reason to eat them. Not only do they have zero nutritional value, but they also give your body a healthy dose of toxins, which should make the idea of eating them really hard to swallow.

Doughnuts

Doughnuts are fried, full of sugar and white flour and most all varieties contain trans fat. Store-bought doughnuts are made up of about 35 percent to 40 percent trans fat.

An average doughnut will give you about 200 to 300 calories, mostly from sugar, and few other nutrients.

It's too bad that Americans view doughnuts as a breakfast food as, nutritionally speaking, eating a doughnut is one of the worst ways to start off your day. It will throw off your blood sugar and won't stay with you so you'll be hungry again soon. You are better off eating no breakfast at all, or better yet grabbing a quick glass of Whey Healthier.

Soda

One can of soda has about 10 teaspoons of sugar, 150 calories, 30 to 55 mg of caffeine, and is loaded with artificial food colors and sulphites. I can't think of any good reason to ever have it. The diet varieties are also problematic as they are filled with harmful artificial sweeteners like aspartame.

Studies have linked soda to osteoporosis, obesity, tooth decay and heart disease, yet the average American drinks an estimated 56 gallons of soft drinks each year. Plus, drinking all that sugar will likely suppress your appetite for healthy foods, which pave the way for nutrient deficiencies.

Soft drink consumption among children has almost doubled in the United States over the last decade, which is not surprising considering that most school hallways are lined with soda-filled vending machines.

Schools often make marketing deals with leading soft drink companies such as Coca-Cola from which they receive commissions--based on a percentage of sales at each school--and sometimes a lump-sum payment, in exchange for their students' health. School vending machines can increase the consumption of sweetened beverages by up to 50 or more cans of soda per student per year.

If you routinely drink soda--regular or diet--eliminating it from your diet is one of the simplest and most profound health improvements you can make.

French Fries (and Nearly All Commercially Fried Foods)

Potatoes are bad enough when consumed in their raw state, as their simple sugars are rapidly converted to glucose that raises insulin levels and can devastate your health. But when they are cooked in trans fat at high temperatures, all sorts of interesting and very unpleasant things occur.

Anything that is fried, even vegetables, has the issue of trans fat and the potent cancer-causing substance acrylamide.

Foods that are fried in vegetable oils like canola, soybean, safflower, corn, and other seed and nut oils are particularly problematic. These polyunsaturated fats easily become rancid when exposed to oxygen and produce large amounts of damaging free radicals in the body. They are also very susceptible to heat-induced damage from cooking. What is not commonly known is that these oils can actually cause aging, clotting, inflammation, cancer and weight gain. You can read the article "Secrets of the Edible Oil Industry" for more information.

It is theoretically possible to create a more "healthy" French fry if you cook it in a healthy fat like virgin coconut oil. Due to its high saturated fat content, coconut oil is extremely stable and is not damaged by the high temperatures of cooking. This is why coconut oil should be the only oil you use to cook with.

I am fond of telling patients that one French fry is worse for your health than one cigarette, so you may want to consider this before you order your next 'Biggie' order.

Chips

Most commercial chips, and this includes corn chips, potato chips, tortilla chips, you name it, are high in trans fat. Fortunately, some companies have caught on to the recent media blitz about the dangers of trans fat and have started to produce chips without trans fat.

However, the high temperatures used to cook them will potentially cause the formation of carcinogenic substances like acrylamide, and this risk remains even if the trans fat is removed.

Fried Non-Fish Seafood

This category represents the culmination of non-healthy aspects of food. Fried shrimp, clams, oysters, lobsters, and so on have all the issues of trans fat and acrylamide mentioned above, plus an added risk of mercury.

Seafood is loaded with toxic mercury and shellfish like shrimp and lobsters can be contaminated with parasites and resistant viruses that may not even be killed with high heat. These creatures, considered scavenger animals, consume foods that may be harmful for you.

Eating these foods gives you a quadruple dose of toxins--trans fat, acrylamide, mercury and possibly parasites or viruses--with every bite.

If you have a taste for seafood, there's an easy solution. It's best to avoid your local fish fry and try the only fish I now eat--the delicious wild red Alaskan salmon that was proven through independent lab testing to be free of harmful levels of mercury and other contaminants.

Too Much Cola Can Cause Muscle Problems

Too Much Cola Can Cause Muscle Problems

HealthDay
By HealthDay news

- written WEDNESDAY, May 27 (HealthDay News) --

Drinking too much cola can increase the risk of a muscle problem called hypokalemia, experts warn.

In people with hypokalemia, a drop in blood potassium levels results in problems with vital muscle functions.
Symptoms can range from mild weakness to serious paralysis, say Greek researchers who conducted a review of people who drank between two to nine liters of cola a day.

"We are consuming more soft drinks than ever before, and a number of health issues have already been identified including tooth problems, bone demineralization and the development of metabolic syndrome and diabetes," and there's increasing evidence that excessive cola consumption leads to hypokalemia, Dr. Moses Elisaf, of the University of Ioannina, said in the news release. Elisaf said the three most common ingredients in cola -- glucose, fructose and caffeine -- can contribute to hypokalemia.
The case studies are described in the June issue of the International Journal of Clinical Practice.

The MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia has more about hypokalemia.

Can Chiropractic care help your Immune System?

Chiropractical Solutions & Massage Newsletter

Can Chiropractic care help your Immune System?

Flu and Sickness Prevention Plan Should Include Chiropractic says the research.

As the news on the swine flu has decreased it highlighted important points that we need to keep our immune system functioning at its best.
Read below for studies that have been done on how Chiropractic helps to increase the immune system. Thank you for reading.

The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health issued a release on May 04, 2009 with the above headline urging people to include chiropractic during this most recent flu scare.

The article reads:

"People of all ages are encouraged to add chiropractic to their strategy for warding off and fighting the flu and its effects – swine flu or otherwise.
Spinal adjustments can have a positive effect on immune function according to a growing number of researchers who are exploring the common
denominators in disease processes, and the role of the nervous, immune, and hormonal systems in development of immune related illnesses."

Dr. Christopher Kent a chiropractor and past recipient of the researcher of the year award by the International Chiropractors Association stated,
"Contemporary research is beginning to shed light on the neurobiological mechanisms which may explain the outstanding clinical results chiropractors
have experienced when managing patients with viral and infectious diseases."

Dr. Kent further explained: “A comprehensive review of the research literature reveals the current understanding that the brain and immune system are
the two major adaptive systems in the body. During an immune response, the brain and the immune system 'talk to each other' and this process is
essential for maintaining homeostasis or balance in the body.”

According to the release, chiropractic holds that viruses and microbes don't threaten us all equally and that a healthy immune system easily repels most invaders.
The immune system protects us from the flu, as well as any other infectious disease, and strives to get us well again when we do fall ill. Our immune system,
like every other system in the body, is coordinated and controlled by the nervous system. Helping the nervous system function at its optimal level is accomplished by removing any interference caused by spinal subluxations.

The release noted that Chiropractors helping patients battle the flu has historical roots. During the 1917-18 influenza epidemic, it was estimated that 20 million
people died throughout the world, including about 500,000 Americans. During that time it was chiropractic’s success in caring for flu victims that led to the
profession gaining recognition and official licensure in many states. Researchers note that historical data in Davenport Iowa showed that out of the 93,590 patients
treated by medical doctors, there were 6,116 deaths -- a loss of one patient out of every 15. Chiropractors at the Palmer School of Chiropractic adjusted 1,635 cases, with only one death.

Matthew McCoy DC, MPH, Editor of the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health, commented, "These results are not so surprising given what we now know
about the interaction between the nervous system and the immune system. Through research we know that chiropractic has beneficial effects on immunoglobulins,
B-lymphocytes (white blood cells), pulmonary function and other immune system processes.”

Dr. McCoy summed up his recommendations by saying, "In addition to the passive recommendations regarding hand washing, avoiding large gatherings,
coughing and sneezing into your hands – it makes a great deal of sense to do everything you can to ensure that your immune system is functioning at its best.
And that strategy should include chiropractic care."

What are the most commonly asked questions from our patients about Chiropractic?

Chiropractical Solutions & Massage

What are the most commonly asked questions from our patients about Chiropractic?

We receive lots of questions via e-mail and in the office from our patients everyday. Here is a list of answers to the most commonly asked questions. If you think of any other questions then please feel free to e-mail us at drweisz@drweisz.com.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How Does the Chiropractic adjustment Work?

Spinal joints that are "locked up", fixated, misaligned, or not moving right can affect your health by "choking" or irritating nearby nerve tissue.
Chiropractic adjustments add motion to these stuck areas. This helps restore nervous system integrity and improves the healing process.
It helps decrease pain, improve mobility, and increases health of the body.

Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

Yes. A New Zealand government study found that adjustments are "remarkably safe." By avoiding drugs and risky surgery, chiropractic care enjoys an excellent track record.
A thorough exam can identify the rare person for whom chiropractic care might be unsuited. If you compare the statistics, adjustments are much safer than taking
an over-the-counter pain reliever. Chiropractic treatment is safe and gentle enough for a newborn child and for an elderly person as well. There are a variety of treatment
techniques used for each individual since everyone is different.

What are causes of joint and muscle aches and pains in the body?

There are 2 main causes for muscle and joint pains in the body:
1. Major traumas: Major traumas are slips, falls, lifting something heavy too fast, car accidents, sports injuries, etc. These are events that occur hard and fast.
2. Minor traumas: Minor traumas are sitting, sleeping, or standing with poor posture. These repetitive incorrect postures add up over time and put undue stress on the spine and muscles.

These major and minor traumas cause spinal bones to get "stuck" and spinal joints can become misaligned. These misalignments can irritate delicate nerves
because the
joints in your spine are so close to your spinal cord and nerve roots. Too little joint motion and misalignments can have serious effects because
it can press against adjacent nerve tissue. Therefore, if spinal joints do not function properly then muscles can tighten in certain areas creating imbalances in the body.
Discs, ligaments and other connective tissues can become inflamed. Bone spurs and arthritic degeneration can set in.
The chiropractic doctor is a licensed health care professional dedicated to the detection, reduction and prevention of spinal nerve irritation from misaligned and fixated areas of the spine.
Massage is one of the best modalities to help relax the tight muscles in the body. Both Chiropractic and Massage treatment along with changing daily postural habits helps a great deal
with aches and pains and puts people on the path to wellness and prevention.

How long does it take for chiropractic to work?

Chiropractic results vary depending upon many factors. How long have you had your problem? Are you sitting, sleeping, or standing with poor posture on a weekly basis?
Do you keep your appointments? Are you getting the proper rest, exercise and nutrition? Are you in otherwise good health? How many major traumas and minor traumas
have you had throughout your life? Other factors are how old someone is because if someone is older with the same problem then it will take longer to heal.
Within a short period of time most patients sense enough progress to justify completing our recommendations and staying on track with their health.
Since chiropractic care depends on the healing abilities of each patient, results are hard to predict. Every patient responds differently. Some detect changes
in a few short days or weeks. Others may take weeks to months before showing progress.
After all, you only have one body so you must take care of it so it can take care of you!

Will I need chiropractic care forever?

It is up to you! Patients choose Chiropractic care for pain relief or they choose preventative longer term care at our office to maintain healthy joints and muscles before it becomes a problem.
After patients get the relief they want, many choose to continue with some type of periodic care. It is completely up to you whether you continue with care to maintain optimum wellness and get periodic check ups
or choose to not continue treatments beyond pain relief. Chiropractic "checkups" can help support the final stages of healing and help detect and resolve new problems before they become serious. How long you want to receive chiropractic care is up to you.
It is very similar to getting periodic teeth checkups at the dentist to detect small cavities before they get bigger. The importance of keeping up with daily exercises and improved posture prescribed is essential in warding off future problems.
Everyone has different goals for care so we work to decrease pain, increase function and mobility, and improve health the best we can when patients come in.

How do I know if I have stuck or misaligned joints if I do not have pain?

You can have stuck and misaligned joints and not even know it. Misaligned joints are caused by major and minor traumas in the body.
Like tooth decay or cancer,
stuck and misaligned joints can be present before any warning signs appear.
The results of a thorough examination can show the location and severity of any
stuck and misaligned joints you may have.

Will I Have To Live With the Pain?

We would hope not! Pain is a warning sign. Like the piercing sound from a smoke alarm, the alarm isn't the problem. The alarm has a cause, just
like every ache or pain has a cause. Some people choose to cover up the pain with medications instead of correcting the cause.
Often times, pain is the first indication for someone that there is a problem, but typically that problem had been building and around for a lot longer.
More and more people are choosing chiropractic care first to correct the cause of the problem in the joints and muscles.
Specific chiropractic adjustments can help improve spinal function and helps with
stuck and misaligned joints which takes pressure off of the nerves .
Better yet, chiropractic care is safe. Chiropractic is natural. And chiropractic looks to correct the underlying cause of the problem

Effects of Chiropractic Treatment on Blood Pressure and Anxiety

Title: Effects of Chiropractic Treatment on Blood Pressure and Anxiety: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Reference: Yates RG, Lamping NL, Abram C et al. The effects of chiropractic treatment on blood pressure and anxiety: a randomized, controlled trial. J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1988; 11(6): 484-8

Abstract: This study examined the effects of chiropractic adjustments of the thoracic spine (T1-T5) on blood pressure and state anxiety in 21 patients with elevated blood pressure. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three treatment conditions: active treatment, placebo treatment, or no treatment control. The adjustments were performed by a mechanical chiropractic adjusting device (Activator adjusting instrument). Dependent measures obtained pre- and post-treatment included systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and state anxiety. Results indicated that systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly in the active treatment condition, whereas no significant changes occurred in the placebo and control conditions. State anxiety significantly decreased in the active and control conditions. Results provide support for the hypothesis that blood pressure is reduced following chiropractic treatment. Further study is needed to examine the long-term effects of chiropractic treatment on blood pressure. J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1988; 11(6):484-488.
