What are the most commonly asked questions from our patients about Chiropractic?

We receive lots of questions via e-mail and in the office from our patients everyday. Here is a list of answers to the most commonly asked questions. If you think of any other questions then please feel free to e-mail us at drweisz@drweisz.com.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How Does the Chiropractic adjustment Work?

Spinal joints that are "locked up", fixated, misaligned, or not moving right can affect your health by "choking" or irritating nearby nerve tissue.
Chiropractic adjustments add motion to these stuck areas. This helps restore nervous system integrity and improves the healing process.
It helps decrease pain, improve mobility, and increases health of the body.

Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

Yes. A New Zealand government study found that adjustments are "remarkably safe." By avoiding drugs and risky surgery, chiropractic care enjoys an excellent track record.
A thorough exam can identify the rare person for whom chiropractic care might be unsuited. If you compare the statistics, adjustments are much safer than taking
an over-the-counter pain reliever. Chiropractic treatment is safe and gentle enough for a newborn child and for an elderly person as well. There are a variety of treatment
techniques used for each individual since everyone is different.

What are causes of joint and muscle aches and pains in the body?

There are 2 main causes for muscle and joint pains in the body:
1. Major traumas: Major traumas are slips, falls, lifting something heavy too fast, car accidents, sports injuries, etc. These are events that occur hard and fast.
2. Minor traumas: Minor traumas are sitting, sleeping, or standing with poor posture. These repetitive incorrect postures add up over time and put undue stress on the spine and muscles.

These major and minor traumas cause spinal bones to get "stuck" and spinal joints can become misaligned. These misalignments can irritate delicate nerves
because the
joints in your spine are so close to your spinal cord and nerve roots. Too little joint motion and misalignments can have serious effects because
it can press against adjacent nerve tissue. Therefore, if spinal joints do not function properly then muscles can tighten in certain areas creating imbalances in the body.
Discs, ligaments and other connective tissues can become inflamed. Bone spurs and arthritic degeneration can set in.
The chiropractic doctor is a licensed health care professional dedicated to the detection, reduction and prevention of spinal nerve irritation from misaligned and fixated areas of the spine.
Massage is one of the best modalities to help relax the tight muscles in the body. Both Chiropractic and Massage treatment along with changing daily postural habits helps a great deal
with aches and pains and puts people on the path to wellness and prevention.

How long does it take for chiropractic to work?

Chiropractic results vary depending upon many factors. How long have you had your problem? Are you sitting, sleeping, or standing with poor posture on a weekly basis?
Do you keep your appointments? Are you getting the proper rest, exercise and nutrition? Are you in otherwise good health? How many major traumas and minor traumas
have you had throughout your life? Other factors are how old someone is because if someone is older with the same problem then it will take longer to heal.
Within a short period of time most patients sense enough progress to justify completing our recommendations and staying on track with their health.
Since chiropractic care depends on the healing abilities of each patient, results are hard to predict. Every patient responds differently. Some detect changes
in a few short days or weeks. Others may take weeks to months before showing progress.
After all, you only have one body so you must take care of it so it can take care of you!

Will I need chiropractic care forever?

It is up to you! Patients choose Chiropractic care for pain relief or they choose preventative longer term care at our office to maintain healthy joints and muscles before it becomes a problem.
After patients get the relief they want, many choose to continue with some type of periodic care. It is completely up to you whether you continue with care to maintain optimum wellness and get periodic check ups
or choose to not continue treatments beyond pain relief. Chiropractic "checkups" can help support the final stages of healing and help detect and resolve new problems before they become serious. How long you want to receive chiropractic care is up to you.
It is very similar to getting periodic teeth checkups at the dentist to detect small cavities before they get bigger. The importance of keeping up with daily exercises and improved posture prescribed is essential in warding off future problems.
Everyone has different goals for care so we work to decrease pain, increase function and mobility, and improve health the best we can when patients come in.

How do I know if I have stuck or misaligned joints if I do not have pain?

You can have stuck and misaligned joints and not even know it. Misaligned joints are caused by major and minor traumas in the body.
Like tooth decay or cancer,
stuck and misaligned joints can be present before any warning signs appear.
The results of a thorough examination can show the location and severity of any
stuck and misaligned joints you may have.

Will I Have To Live With the Pain?

We would hope not! Pain is a warning sign. Like the piercing sound from a smoke alarm, the alarm isn't the problem. The alarm has a cause, just
like every ache or pain has a cause. Some people choose to cover up the pain with medications instead of correcting the cause.
Often times, pain is the first indication for someone that there is a problem, but typically that problem had been building and around for a lot longer.
More and more people are choosing chiropractic care first to correct the cause of the problem in the joints and muscles.
Specific chiropractic adjustments can help improve spinal function and helps with
stuck and misaligned joints which takes pressure off of the nerves .
Better yet, chiropractic care is safe. Chiropractic is natural. And chiropractic looks to correct the underlying cause of the problem

Effects of Chiropractic Treatment on Blood Pressure and Anxiety

Title: Effects of Chiropractic Treatment on Blood Pressure and Anxiety: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Reference: Yates RG, Lamping NL, Abram C et al. The effects of chiropractic treatment on blood pressure and anxiety: a randomized, controlled trial. J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1988; 11(6): 484-8

Abstract: This study examined the effects of chiropractic adjustments of the thoracic spine (T1-T5) on blood pressure and state anxiety in 21 patients with elevated blood pressure. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three treatment conditions: active treatment, placebo treatment, or no treatment control. The adjustments were performed by a mechanical chiropractic adjusting device (Activator adjusting instrument). Dependent measures obtained pre- and post-treatment included systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and state anxiety. Results indicated that systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly in the active treatment condition, whereas no significant changes occurred in the placebo and control conditions. State anxiety significantly decreased in the active and control conditions. Results provide support for the hypothesis that blood pressure is reduced following chiropractic treatment. Further study is needed to examine the long-term effects of chiropractic treatment on blood pressure. J Manipulative Physiol Ther 1988; 11(6):484-488.
