Chiropractic management of musculoskeletal pain in the multiple sclerosis patient

The abstract below talks about some of the pain syndromes that patients with MS suffer from. Chiropractic care treats chronic musculoskeletal aches and pains that are related to the spine and other areas. Chiropractic and Massage work together to help get the joints of the spine functioning better while Massage Therapy can help relax tight muscles in the body to promote healing. If you know of someone suffering with MS then send them the article to read over.

Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a common disabling disease. Five to 10% of MS patients will enter a long-term care facility. The majority of MS patients suffer from some type of pain syndrome. Pain syndromes in MS can be divided into three categories: acute; subacute or paroxysmal and chronic. Chronic pain syndromes have been anecdotally reported to respond to mechanical treatments. Chiropractic care has shown efficacy in the treatment of chronic spinal pain. Chiropractic care may represent a viable treatment option for the MS patient suffering from chronic pain syndromes. Chiropractic care has been successfully integrated into a chronic care facility which is affiliated with a private university medical school. Chiropractic has been utilized in this setting for pain management of MS patients suffering from chronic pain syndromes. Preliminary findings from this clinic suggest that chiropractic may represent one treatment alternative for chronic pain in MS patients in a long-term care facility. Further studies will be needed to definitively determine the efficacy of chiropractic for the management of chronic pain in the MS patient.

Can Chiropractic Care help people with Multiple Sclerosis?

Read the article below that display some of the positive effects that this woman had with Chiropractic Treatment for aches and pains. This treatment helped with quality of life by decreasing various pain such as Low back pain, neck pain, and other related aches. This article does not in any way say that Chiropractic care can treat the underlying causes of the disease.

Here is a summary of the article below and you can go to the source of the article at

http://ping.fm/heeoR

Recent research reported in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health - Chiropractic revealed improvement in symptoms related to multiple sclerosis in a woman undergoing chiropractic care suggesting that chiropractic may play an important role in managing people with such disorders.

The 51 year old woman reported on in the study also suffered from gastroesophageal reflux disorder (often called GERD), asthma and a number of other problems which were all helped through chiropractic care. The research includes a review of the literature on the role of chiropractic in such disorders.

"Research is revealing that there is a relationship between abnormalities in the spine, the nervous system and brain," stated Dr. Ben Lerner, lead author of the paper. "Researchers from different fields are now showing that trauma, problems in the upper neck and problems with blood flow to and from the brain may be playing a significant role in multiple sclerosis."

"It makes perfect sense when you think about it" stated Dr. Sheri Lerner, a co-author on the paper. "Our study is one more example of how people with these debilitating conditions can be helped through specific chiropractic adjustments to restore normal spinal and nervous system function."

According to Dr. Matthew McCoy, a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study, "Chiropractors have been talking about these links for some time now and I think research in this area will soon reach a critical mass because its not just chiropractors saying this any more. You have researchers in several different fields coming to similar conclusions. The real challenge with these models is going to be showing what works best and chiropractic has a respectable foundation of research in this area" stated McCoy.

In the case reported on in the article the initial application of chiropractic was followed by nutritional advice which included eliminating sugar and grains from the patient's diet. Correction of the spinal and related neurological interference was the first priority however. Abnormal position or movement of the spinal vertebra can develop and this can lead to nerve and vascular interference. It is this interference, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors correct.

The woman reported on in the study suffered from a number of health challenges including multiple sclerosis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), asthma, osteoarthritis, and scoliosis. She also had complaints of neck pain, back pain and jaw pain. She had been under the care of several healthcare professionals prior to presenting to the chiropractic office. These practitioners included the family medical doctor, a neurologist, allergist, rheumatologist, gastrointestinal specialist, cardiologist, and dermatologist. She was taking several medications.

The patient began to report improvement in pain levels throughout her body after just 12 visits, had better mobility and was able to increase her physical activity. Her lung function and posture improved and she was gradually able to discontinue all her medications.

The authors of the study call for more research on the role of chiropractic care in these types of disorders.

What are the Chicago Blackhawks doing that you should also start doing?

I was reading the article that you see below and thought it was definitely worth sharing.

**Take home point: Look into taking a D3 supplement

You have to practice what you preach! ...I take a delicious gummy vitamin D3 everyday so next time you are in the office you can ask me about it.

Have a great day and enjoy the article below ...

TheChicago Blackhawks are the First Vitamin D Team in Modern Professional Sports History

PRNewswire-USNewswire

05-28-10

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif., May 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Chicago Blackhawk team physicians began diagnosing and treating vitamin D deficiency in all Blackhawk players about 18 months ago. Apparently, most players are on 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 per day. To confirm this assertion, simply ask the Blackhawk organization.

After many losing seasons, last year the Blackhawks came out of nowhere to get to the Western conference finals. This year the Blackhawks are playing even better.

According to my sources, improved athletic performance is only one of the benefits for the Blackhawk players. The other is a reduction in the number and severity of lower respiratory tract infections and a reduction in the number and severity of repetitive use injuries.

Six months ago, Runner's World published a story on vitamin D and athletic performance.

Asp K. Running on D: The "sun vitamin" may boost performance, but you probably aren't getting enough.Runners World, December 2009.

A year ago, the flagship journal of the American College of Sports Medicine published the evidence that vitamin D would improve athletic performance, including evidence vitamin D played a role in the USSR and East Germany domination of the Olympics in the 1960s, 70s, and early 80s.

Cannell JJ, Hollis BW, Sorenson MB, Taft TN, Anderson JJ. Athletic performance and vitamin D. Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2009 May;41(5):1102-10.

Recently, researchers in England found a direct and strong relationship between muscle power and vitamin D levels in teenage girls.

Ward KA, et al. Vitamin D status and muscle function in post-menarchal adolescent girls. J Clin Endocrinol Metab. 2009 Feb;94(2):559-63.

However, readers of the Vitamin D Council's newsletter first learned about vitamin D and athletic performance in 2007:

Cannell, JJ. Peak Athletic Performance and Vitamin D. Vitamin D Council Newsletter, March 2007.

If the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup this year, other teams, from high school to professional, may start paying attention to the vitamin D status of their players. That would be a big boost to the Vitamin D Council's goal of educating the world about the importance of vitamin D.

Does drinking more water really help dieting?

Here is the source for the full article:

http://ping.fm/XtRKL

A small study says it may help you burn a few more calories each day. How many? About 50 calories per liter or quart of water. About 25 calories per water bottle-full of water. Mind you, that's only 5 M&Ms - plain, not peanut.

Why Drink More When Dieting?

* Drinking a big glass of water whenever you feel hungry and before a meal or snack fills the stomach briefly and makes you feel fuller and stop eating sooner.

* Breaking down body fat and body muscle during weight loss produces wastes that must be eliminated through the kidneys. Drinking enough water is important to keep the kidneys functioning to remove these wastes.

* Popular high-protein diets produce more waste products from digestion, let alone from breaking down stored fat. Kidney function is even more important when on a high-protein diet.

* Drinking more water does not "flush fat."

* If the dieter is drinking plain water, he/she is less likely to be drinking something with calories in it.

Drinking Water Briefly Increases Metabolism

Drinking 500 mL of water (a half-liter or about a pint) increased the study participants' metabolism briefly - for about a half hour. In that time they burned an extra 25 calories. That's about a quarter of a piece of sliced bread, or 5 M&Ms. The researchers theorized that most of the effect comes from warming the water in the stomach. In the male participants the calories came mostly from stored fat, in the women it came from stored carbohydrates. The paper was published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, December, 2003. It was conducted by researchers in Berlin.

Eight Glasses of Water a Day?

The study provides some support for the general recommendation to drink eight glasses of water a day while dieting. For most people that would add a liter or two to their regular water intake. The extra calorie-burn would be about 100 calories a day if drinking 2 liters (2 quarts or 4 water-bottles full) more than usual.

Dangers of Too Much Water

Don't start drinking an extra gallon of water a day
Water taken in must be in balance with body salt - electrolytes. The body needs to maintain salt balance or risk hyponatremia with heart attack and even death. Drinking too much water dilutes the salt in your blood and tissues - and can kill you. Healthy athletes have died from drinking too much plain water and not replacing salt. Dieters should not plunge into drinking gallons of water a day in hopes of burning a few more calories. Drink an extra few glasses, yes. But a gallon is too much.

Drinking and Walking

Exercise such as walking causes the metabolism to rise and body water to be lost through increased respiration and sweat. Walkers should drink a large glass of water an hour before walking, then drink about a cup of water every mile. When you finish walking, drink a glass of water. Guidelines for the marathon and half-marathon now say to "drink when thirsty" rather than pushing water, in order to prevent hyponatremia - drinking too much with replacing electrolytes.

We hope you enjoyed this information from the above sources.
